The New Moon in Scorpio arrives on November 1, 2024, at 5:47 AM PT, bringing potent energy for emotional depth, deep-seated primal forces, and unbridled urges for regeneration and change. With the Sun and Moon at 9º 35' Scorpio, and with Mars exactly opposed to transformational Pluto, this lunation invites us to confront what lies beneath the surface and align with our truth through cycles of metamorphosis, with a hefty cosmic nudge to unearth and tend to core patterns and wounds.
At the heart of this New Moon is that tense opposition between Mars, the traditional ruler of Scorpio, and Pluto, its modern ruler, with both perched at the critical anaretic (last) degree of their signs, of Cancer and Capricorn respectively. This planetary polarization brings deep emotional undercurrents to the surface, signaling the final chapter of a long saga, both personal and collective, as Pluto prepares to leave Capricorn for the last time, and enter Aquarius on November 19th. Mars in Cancer can stir defensiveness or reactivity, especially around family dynamics, but it also points to the importance of tending to emotional boundaries, how we relate to anger, and how we protect ourselves emotionally. I doubt I need to remind anyone that this New Moon is happening just days before the rather intense U.S. Election — and this Pluto-Mars opposition mirrors and amplifies the current fraught atmosphere. It is important to note that Mars’ current position will be revisited during his retrograde in early January, and again, once more direct, in mid-April, bringing the themes that arise now in this current month through a cycle of re-examining the Mars themes of aggression, confrontation, will-power, vitality, and inner-warrior nature.
If this intense opposition between Mars and Pluto weren’t enough, completing a T-square with them is Juno at 29º Libra. Juno speaks to commitment, sacred partnership, and our devotion to relational integrity. This configuration suggests that unresolved relationship dynamics may be triggered — whether through power struggles, unspoken expectations, or shifts in relational agreements. With all three planetary archetypes at the anaretic degree, the energy of this T-square heightens urgency around final decisions, release, and recalibration. There’s a strong push to clarify where your relational and personal priorities lie as you move forward into a new chapter. This alignment invites us to release old relational dynamics that no longer serve, making room for deeper alignment with our values and connections that reflect us in our fullness, vitality, and authenticity.
Despite the intensity, the Sun and Moon form a supportive trine to Saturn in Pisces, bringing some element of grounding this transformative energy. Saturn offers stability, encouraging us to integrate change slowly and intentionally. We also find Mercury in trine to Neptune and Mars from its 28° position in Scorpio. This is a somewhat spacey energy to be sure, and yet the spiritual connection to our innermost thoughts can also bring a more cosmic perspective that can be enlightening and even comforting in the face of such radical times as these. Coupled with Saturn’s influence, the work of this New Moon — though challenging — can foster lasting growth.
Another key feature of this New Moon is Venus in Sagittarius opposing Jupiter in Gemini. Venus, currently out of bounds, operates outside the usual constraints, bringing heightened exuberance, passion, and unpredictability to our relationships, values, and desires. Combined with Jupiter’s expansive energy in Gemini, there is a risk of scattering energy or overindulgence, yet also a beautiful opportunity for learning, exploration, and creative expansion. The out-of-bounds quality of Venus also encourages us to think outside the box, to experiment, and to find joy in unconventional ways. This aspect adds a playful, open-ended flavor to the otherwise serious tone of the New Moon, reminding us that freedom and pleasure are essential elements of personal transformation.
This Scorpio New Moon asks us to embrace change, and to actively plant the seeds that we wish to sow. While it is definitely a feather ruffler, the coarseness asks us to squarely confront the truth, warts and all, and make our choices with conviction. It also reminds us to keep active threads of enjoyment, play, and pleasure alive, as an important salve to soothe the sting of challenge and strife by metabolizing pain into creative life-force energy. As the emotional currents of this lunation flow through, trust that every ending paves the way for new beginnings, and that transformation is the gateway to clarity and renewal. May we each have the grit and tenacity to meet the present moment, and the gentleness and kindness to love ourselves and each other through whatever may arise.
