October is an interesting month, not least because it is kicked off in its second day by an impressive solar eclipse and New Moon on mid-day of October 2nd, featuring a tight conjunction between Sun, Moon, Makemake, Lilith and Mercury, all within a degree and a half, which is quite unusual. This extra-potent New Moon also features a grand trine in Water signs between Venus in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, and Saturn in Pisces, plus a stationing Pluto in Capricorn’s final degree of 29 and a half, thus hovering right on the knife’s edge of Aquarius, and scheduled to rejoin that storied ingress in mid-November. We also find Pluto in aspect to several personal planets throughout the month, namely Mercury, Venus, and the Sun, as they change signs. All three outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are aspecting each other by trine and sextile, because residing at 26, 28 and 29 degrees of their respective signs as the month begins. What does it all mean? Just that we have a challenging time of it right now, with plenty of transformational effects on the horizon. We will likely be tested, and we have no choice, really, but to come through, getting in the process older, more beat up, and far wiser.
This is also an important monthly cycle due to subsequent lunations including the quarter moons. The Moon’s First Quarter takes place on Tuesday the 10th, in Capricorn, and features a grand cross between Sun, Moon, Chiron, and Mars. Jupiter has additionally just turned to retrograde motion in alignment with a Mercury opposition with Chiron, the Wounded Healer. It is possible that inner wounding will come up in the aftermath of the Jupiter event of the 9th, and additionally in the timing of this interesting First Quarter Moon of the 10th, the phase seminal 20th century astrologer Dane Rudhyar termed a “crisis of action.”
Then we have the Aries Full Moon of October 17th, which turns out to be exactly conjunct Eris in Aries, at 24° of the sign. The implication with Eris so powerfully called forth is that refresher course is on offer for coming to understand of what may constitute one’s most profound inner value of life purpose. There is also invoked a strong transformational component with Mars in Cancer in a T-square with Sun and Moon, and exactly parallel to Jupiter, with both of these planets contra-parallel to a relatively stationary Pluto at 29° 39’ of Capricorn, on the very border of the Aquarius sign. Pluto is also still in square to the new 21st century KBO Nature planet, Haumea. Passions could run high at this timing, and our actions could prove to be extremely consequential.
The Last Quarter Moon of the Libra lunation cycle takes place on the 24th and is at 1° Leo, with the Sun at 1° Scorpio, in partile or same-degree conjunction with Haumea, herself in square with Pluto at 29° Capricorn. This brings up the Pluto- Haumea long-term square, very active since February of last year, and having to do with connection to Nature, and to natural settings, our pets and other animals, and issues of natural law – right relationship and right action – and its violations, such as contrasting lies versus truth.
We live in fractious times, as we have been living through recent years, and it feels like this October month in particular, and, indeed, the entire ending of this 2024 year, is fully up to the intensity of this difficult decade. It often seems like the challenges at hand outweigh our capacity to deal with them, so that we may feel powerless in the face of the huge momentum of blind thoughtlessness and lack of caring. The phrase W. B. Yeats was prone to, in his distant and yet perhaps equally difficult day, still rings true in our time also: “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are filled with passionate intensity.” And yet there is, always and inescapably, the still small voice of our angel guidance telling us not to fear and to trust in the universe to see us through. And this is where the message of Eris, Feminine Warrior in support of each individual’s soul intention, is relevant as we can come to it. To honor this archetype, highlighted in this month’s astrology, it is requisite that we delve deep within ourselves to discover our own unique bottom line that we must, finally, adhere to; and then we will have done our work and inhabited to the utmost our authenticity. And the wonderful thing about that is that we are then no longer powerless in the face of consensual momentum. We know where we stand.
