Wednesday’s Scorpio New Moon, taking place on the morning of November 7th, afternoon for Europe and points east, is quite an interesting configuration emphasizing connecting to the divinity of Nature, looking more deeply into all your activities, especially those of the relationship kind, and taking a stand, no matter what, for your own unique perspective. That is because there are new planets beyond Pluto representing these archetypal energies for Western Astrology, and these are powerfully aligned with personal planets in the configuration of this coming New Moon. Eris, Feminine Warrior in support of deep soul intention, is, by the time the Sun and Moon conjunct in mid-Scorpio, once more in combination with Uranus, because Uranus will have transited backward into Aries, reaching the 29-degree mark, six degrees away from conjuncting Eris. More importantly, their midpoint at 26 + of Aries will be opposed by a stationing Venus and sextiled by Mars in Aquarius. We are therefore experiencing a strong push from these alignments to express and act on our deepest values going forward. The presence of retrograde Venus here implies a relationship orientation, and also might signal, especially in Libra, a milder form of confrontation and advancing of political agendas than we have seen in the divisive run-up to the US mid-term election. As far as this country goes, the understanding is that, instead of slacking off once the upcoming election is over, and the ballots counted, everyone will be fully energized to continue the battle in one form or another into the coming weeks, months, and years. And this will be the case no matter what result we see in terms of the post-election make-up of congress.
Venus, in her turn, as she slows to a crawl, preparing to station to direct movement on November 16th at 25 degrees of Libra, is exactly conjunct the new nature planet, Haumea. Named after the fecund creation goddess of Hawaii, she can be shown to symbolize a nature-goddess energy and a protean life-changing influence that fosters powerful manifestations of the innate spirituality to be found in close connection to Nature. Emphasizing the importance of nature could take another turn if the Kilauea volcano in the Big Island of Hawaii decides to erupt again. This Kuiper Belt Object is one of the four largest known, and has been officially named a “dwarf” planet by the International Astronomical Union, sharing this spotlight with Pluto, Eris, and one other planet, Makemake. The latter can also be demonstrated to represent profound connection to Nature. My work has shown that these four planets, of course including Pluto, have a particularly powerful archetypal presence in charts. Venus and Haumea participate in the Love Planet’s station to direct motion over the next fifteen days: they are never more than one degree apart from before the 7th on through to the 22nd. That Haumea is so closely involved with Venus in this timing suggests that we might see in coming weeks an emphasis on the recognition of Nature, the power of the natural world to heal, and the importance of earth issues.
Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is also strongly placed in this post-election New Moon, being closely parallel to Eris, and also in a nearly exact trine with Jupiter in late Scorpio. There has been so much angst in the country following the extremely partisan recent politics, which have been even expressed in extreme violence, that somehow I am reminded of Lincoln’s second Inaugural address made after Union victory had been assured near the close of the US Civil War. He famously said that we must “bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.” This is not such a misplaced idea, even today, and the potent Jupiter positioning, along with highlighted Venus in Libra, gives us some hope that we could begin, as a nation, moving in the direction, rather than being divided, of getting along.
The Sabian symbol for this New Moon degree is also suggestive of positive change. It is, for the sixteenth degree of Scorpio, “A girl’s face breaking into a smile.” Marc Edmund Jones calls this symbol a “gift for employing the simple things of life to surmount any obstacles to self-fulfillment.” May it be so.
